As a major client of construction projects, the Tasmanian Government can:

  • Realise savings on the construction cost of projects and ongoing savings during the management of the asset for its life;
  • Support the development of local industry BIM capability; minimise Tasmanian projects being awarded to mainland and international firms capable of BIM, due to Tasmanian firms not having BIM capability;
  • Foster partnership and collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive innovation in the Tasmanian construction value chain.
  • Stimulate the creation of jobs in high level information and communication technologies; and
  • Reinforce the Tasmanian brand as innovative and progressive.

To realise those benefits of digital transformation in the whole construction value chain, it is recommended that the Tasmanian Government develop and adopt a Construction Technology Policy that will gradually require the use of BIM on Major Projects.  The Macquarie Point Development would make a significant BIM project and catalyst for BIM uptake by the industry.  By declaring the precinct a “BIM Precinct” and developing digital models Macquarie Point can be a show piece of Digital Construction policy.
